The name Wilkinson Sword is synonymous with the manufacture of high quality blades and cutting instruments, most notably swords and razors. It is no surprise therefore that the brand is also strongly linked with the garden tools industry, in particular cutting and pruning hand tools such as loppers and secateurs. The company dates back to 1772, where it began the manufacture of swords for military use and continued this trend for many years to follow. Believe it or not, they also persisted with the manufacture of some of the earliest production motorcycles during the early part of the 20th Century, including a luxury touring motorcycle called the Wilkinson TMC.
In-between producing swords and motorcycles, they also produced guns, bayonets, typewriters and scissors. With the closing down of its U.K. operations in 2000, production of razors moved to Solingen in Germany. The production of garden tools is now also based mostly in Germany, with the demise of the former manufacturing plant in Bridgend. The quality of Wilkinson Sword gardening tools is not in doubt, with the majority of products backed with a ten-year guarantee against manufacturing defaults, ensuring that the legacy of quality that started back in 1772 continues to this day.
