If you don’t like mowing the grass or simply run out of time to keep your lawn looking the way you want it to, it may be time to invest in a robot or auto mower. Pre-programmable and invented to make your life as easy as possible, auto mowers literally look after themselves and require no specific maintenance from week-to-week. They are often favoured by educational facilities and infirmaries where a low-noise approach to ground maintenance is beneficial, and with virtually no polluting emissions to contaminate the atmosphere, they are also favoured by people concerned about the environment; some robot lawnmower models are even solar powered, keeping your energy requirements to an absolute minimum. Safety of your investment is paramount and most automowers are now equipped with anti-theft devices, preventing the unauthorised removal of the machine from your property.
The life expectancy of robot mower is about ten years, but since all parts they can last twenty years or more, if properly maintained.
Some robot mowers use a simple mapping system whereby a wire boundary is laid around the area that needs to be cut, and the robot detects when it approaches the wire, and changes course in a random direction. More advanced version have 360 laser or radar senses that spot obstacles. You can read our full guide here
In short: yes! While like all lawnmowers robot mowers have cutting blades underneath, built-in safety features such as collision detection systems means that all robot mowers are very safe to use.
All robot mowers are mulching mowers. This means they cannot collect grass, but instead they spread the clipping as they go, so that they decompose and their nutrients is returned to the soil.
