Achieving a truly pristine finish in your garden is impossible if you are not properly equipped, and some domestic grass trimmers simply won’t perform to the level required when it comes to tougher grass cutting applications. As such, those with larger gardens will probably want something with a little bit more bite. Designed to be hard working and brilliantly tough, Efco’s ‘Tough-Tech’ machines bridge the gap between professional and consumer grade garden maintenance tools. The DS 3800 S, for example, is a superbly effective brushcutter ideal for both dedicated home gardeners and semi-professional users alike, making tackling even the densest patches of undergrowth pleasingly hassle-free.
Supplied as standard with both an efficient dual nylon line trimmer head and a sturdy three-tooth brushcutter blade, one reason that the DS 3800 S is so effective is the wide range of cutting jobs with which it excels. The trimmer head, for instance, although designed for taking on grass cutting jobs of any size, offers the precision necessary for tidying around lawn edges and ornaments. For tougher jobs, however, such as trimming thicker, longer grass and dense weeds, nettles and thistles, the brushcutter blade provides an outstandingly potent alternative. Both cutting modes also benefit from the inclusion of a tough plastic blade guard, designed to deflect clippings, stones, soil and other debris while you work, while an improved bevel gear increases durability and helps to facilitate hassle-free switching between blade and trimmer head.
We will dwell on the cutting system a little longer though, as it is here that we see benefits bestowed by Efco’s dedication to innovative design. More specifically, the trimmer head incorporates Efco’s ‘Tap & Go’ and ‘Load & Go’ technology, with both systems (as the names suggest) improving efficiency and making using your brushcutter reassuringly simple. The ‘Tap & Go’ line feed system is particularly useful when taking on bigger jobs, providing quick and easy cutting line advancement via a simple tap of the head against the ground. The ‘Load & Go’ system, meanwhile, means that the trimmer head can be loaded in less than twenty seconds without having to use tools or dismantle the cutting system, making it ideal for less experienced users.
Power to the cutting system is delivered by an industrious 36.3cc two-stroke petrol engine, built with Efco’s ‘Burn Right’ technology to reduce harmful particle emissions and increase fuel economy. As well as being environmentally friendly and decreasing running costs, this system also helps extend the service life of the DS 3800 S by improving combustion and preventing the accumulation of carbon deposits left by unburned fuel. This, along with the protective aluminium casing and powerful air filter, helps to make sure that the engine performs at an optimal level for as long as possible, providing superb reliability and smooth running power even in the toughest cutting conditions.
However, amidst all this talk of power and performance it is important to remember that the DS 3800 S is designed specifically for domestic use and thus also incorporates a number of user-friendly features to ensure ease of operation. A digital ignition coil and a spring-assisted ‘Easy On’ system, for example, work together to provide quick and hassle-free starting, even on cold mornings, while the ‘On/Off’ switch is designed to automatically return to the ‘On’ position for even greater convenience. Moreover, with a comfortable loop handle featuring a high-grip rubber covering also included you can work assured of great control and excellent manoeuvrability at all times, making the DS 3800 S ideal for high maintenance gardens which require frequent attention.

About EfcoGiacomo Ferretti set the foundations of the Efco brand on the road to success back in 1978, spotting an opportunity to satisfy an Italian market beginning to demand high quality outdoor power tools. He responded by producing Efco lawnmowers, brush cutters, and chainsaws. Due to the high quality of the machinery made, the manufacturing of these products soon developed an enviable reputation amongst forestry and agricultural workers, users that demanded the best performance possible from their equipment. Sales of Efco lawnmowers began to soar during the intervening years and the Efco brand is now internationally recognised as a leader in the field of garden machinery manufacturing.
They take their role very seriously though, and were the first company in this sector to achieve official certification in three crucial areas of business sustainability: the ISO 9001:2008 certification for quality in 1996, the SA 8000:2008 certificate for ethical processes of production in 2006 and the ISO 14001:2004, recognising Efco's efforts to reduce their impact on the environment with an ongoing commitment to become Carbon Neutral starting in 2010.
