The Atco Liner 18SH is powered by a Honda GCV 160 Autochoke engine. This mower has a robust steel chassis with an anti-scalp comb fitted in front to ensure the best possible finish, even on undulating lawns. Suitable for a lawn up to 40m x 40m in size.
Stripes look good on many things, including tigers, flags and 19th century prison uniforms. Yet none of these admirably stripy things can compare with a beautifully striped lawn in terms of sheer aesthetic magnificence. Except for maybe the tiger. But tigers and dangerous and not the kind of thing you want in your garden, so all in all you’re better off with a nice striped lawn instead. To achieve this, however, you will need a rear roller mower of some distinction, with Atco’s Liner 18SH a fantastic choice for those with medium sized domestic lawns.
The best thing about the Liner 18SH is that it is a rotary mower which produces the kind of classic striped finish more usually associated with a cylinder mower, but without the extra expense and maintenance demands sometimes associated with these machines. As such any homeowner will be able to achieve great results with little to no fuss when using the Liner 18SH, with a 46cm (18”) working width enabling efficient mowing of medium to large lawns.
Supplied as standard with a hard-topped 55 litre canvas grass collector and equipped with a sturdy rotary cutterblade, the Atco Liner 18SH gathers clippings as grass is cut to deliver a tidy lawn surface. The full-width rear roller and front-mounted anti-scalp comb, meanwhile, prevent lawn scalping (even when mowing along borders) and produce a crisp stripe as you advance. Moreover, with the additional inclusion of five-position centralised height of cut adjustment (available settings range from 20mm to 70mm), the Liner 18SH can be quickly adapted for precise mowing in a variety of grass conditions.
Power, meanwhile, is provided via an efficient 160cc Honda GCV160 OHC four-stroke engine, featuring a recoil starter and an autochoke system for dependably hassle-free ignition. As well as the cutting gear this engine drives the Atco Liner 18SH’s single-speed self-propulsion system, delivering a steady forward speed of 3.9km/h to help ensure an even cut. This also takes the hard work out of mowing larger or undulating lawns, ensuring that routine lawn maintenance doesn’t become a chore. Furthermore, with the inclusion of an ergonomic handlebar and smooth-running front wheels in addition to the self-propulsion system, the Liner 18SH handles pleasingly well.
Atco’s Liner 18SH also features a few bells and whistles to make life (and mowing) a little easier. A “bag full” indicator on the grass collector, for example, allows you to play your working day and helps to ensure efficient clipping disposal. A safety-enhancing Operator Presence Control (OPC) system, moreover, will automatically shut off the engine if the handlebar is released, so you don’t have to worry about the mower going AWOL if you accidentally let go! Built with a durable steel chassis and supplied as standard with a five year manufacturer’s warranty, Atco’s Liner 18SH is thus the most reliable way of achieving a luxurious striped finish on domestic lawns.

In 1921 the first 900 petrol-powered Atco lawnmowers rolled off the production line at the Atco mowers factory in Birmingham and were delivered, believe it or not, by a man on a motorcycle with a specially developed side-car for transportation of these heavy machines. Things have moved on a little since then for Atco mowers, but one thing remains the same — the quality of the Atco mowers and products is as good as it ever was, and even though they expanded into different areas of the garden machinery market, it is their cylinder mowers that they are best know for. The Atco name is synonymous with the British gardening scene and the company has been awarded two Royal Warrants, the first in 1955 from Queen Elizabeth II and again in 1986, this time from HRH The Prince Of Wales.
Robert Bosch GmbH acquired Atco-Qualcast Ltd in 1995 and this brought a modern approach to the manufacturing process with the cylinder mowers that the company is famous for changing tremendously, becoming more light-weight with a marked increase in usability and performance; the introduction of the now famous QX Quick Exchange Cassette System, for instance, allows gardeners to change their lawn application needs without changing machine. Not happy with manufacturing the highest quality products, Atco leads the way in environmental compliance, being the first garden machinery manufacturer to be awarded the environmental management standard BS EN ISO 14001.
